About: In June 2013, a local court ordered Pfizer Inc. to pay a $500 million settlement with two states for illegally promoting the use of erectile dysfunction drugs. In August 2013, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration warned the FDA that the new rules might put men's health at risk for a potentially dangerous adverse drug interaction with Viagra and Cialis, a type of drug promoted to treat erectile dysfunction.
The two states are Florida, a state in the United States with an estimated population of 2.7 million, and New Mexico, with an estimated population of 10 million.
A Pfizer spokeswoman said the FDA's approval of the Viagra and Cialis drugs came after a review of the agency's drug safety studies showed adverse drug interactions between these drugs. The studies showed that the drugs were associated with a small increase in heart attack and stroke risk, but Viagra had no effect, the spokeswoman said. Cialis, which also contains a similar drug, also has been linked to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke, the spokeswoman said.
A spokeswoman for Pfizer said its research was not conclusive and would need further research to confirm Viagra's effectiveness and safety.
Viagra has been linked to a risk of heart attacks and strokes in men taking nitrates for conditions such as angina, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Cialis, another drug, has been linked to a slight increase in blood pressure and may not have the same harmful effects.
The FDA had asked Pfizer to voluntarily withdraw the drugs from the market because they were linked to a risk of heart attacks and strokes. The FDA said Pfizer's withdrawal from the market was in response to reports that the drug could interact with other medications and lead to serious side effects.
Viagra and Cialis are approved by the FDA for use in men with erectile dysfunction. Cialis is approved for use in men 18 and older.
In May 2013, the FDA ordered Pfizer to pay $2.5 million in an settlement with two states for illegally promoting the use of the erectile dysfunction drugs.
